unite online: Supporting deaf children together boy

Dear salutation,

Here at the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) we’ve been asking deaf children what they want to be when they grow up. Click below to see some pictures of typical answers:

“When I grow up I want to be a vet”
“When I grow up I want to be a fashion designer”
“When I grow up I want to be a fireman”

Perfectly reasonable statements from children; why not become a vet, or a fireman? Unfortunately, for deaf children there are quite a few answers to ‘why not’? The main and most important one being education.

Education is the single most important service that determines the future of most children. Unfortunately this service is not equal to everyone, especially deaf children. It’s vital to get people to understand, including teachers, that deafness is not a learning disability and with the right support a deaf child can achieve the same as their hearing peers.

In fact, only 32.9% of deaf children in England achieved five or more GCSEs at grades A* to C, compared to a national average of 57.1%.

We believe that this gap is totally unacceptable.

We are committed to closing this gap between deaf children and their hearing peers so that every deaf child is able to fulfill their potential. If you believe this too, then please register your support with us today.

Thank you
