PPC Reminder

As a result some publishers forbid us or our partners and affiliates from bidding on their brand terms. A list of brand terms that can not be bid on is available http://www.threepm.co.uk/bid-policy.html Please remember to check this regularly as any affiliates found to be bidding on these terms will be removed from our programme.

IAB Voucher Code Guidelines Update

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Hi all,

As you will know, AffiliateFuture are signed up to the IAB Voucher Code Guidelines that came into effect on 1st January 2009.   Since the guidelines came into play the majority of affiliates have met these and taken them in the spirit that they were issued and only one affiliate has so far been temporarily removed from all the participating networks.

It has been necasary to make some clarifications on the guidelines – none of which should effect the Affiliates who are currently compliant.

Here are the ammended guidelines in full

The aim of the IAB’s affiliate marketing council code of best practice for voucher code sites is to ensure that traffic from affiliate sites sent to merchants is not done in a misleading or confusing way and that consumers receive a good user experience. To this end all of the undersigned networks are committed to enforcing the following guidelines:

1.       Affiliates must not use a mechanism whereby users are encouraged to click to interact with content where it is unclear or confusing what the outcome will be. For example:

i) Using “click to reveal code” and opening the site when no valid code is present or an offer/deal/sale is presented instead, without this being made clear before the click.

ii) Using “click to copy code” and opening the site when no valid code is available

iii) Opening the merchant’s site without making it clear that this will occur

2.       Voucher code affiliates must clearly detail the nature of the voucher or offer/deal/sale before a user clicks to interact with it (by revealing, copying, visiting the merchant site etc)

3.       A valid code is defined as a code that has been legitimately issued by a merchant for your use online. This code will have an activation date and, where provided, a deactivation date. When a code has expired it must either be removed or the fact that it has expired must be clearly stated in writing, not simply by listing the expiry date.

4.       Sites displaying voucher codes must contain clear categorization and separation between deals/offers/sales and voucher codes.

5.       Any affiliate judged by one of the participating networks to be contravening the code will be referred to the IAB’s Affiliate Marketing Council and all members will agree on a course of action. The discretion of the council will be used when determining what is judged as misleading or confusing and is not confined to the examples above.

Voucher Codes/Offers

A brief description of TravelPixel
Travelpixel started life as a pet project of mine while working on an e-learning course at the University of Hertfordshire. Primarily a ‘true content’ site relying on offers and discounts combined with holiday reviews, we grew quickly in the fiercely competitive online travel market with a combination of clear helpful content and innovative use of affiliate tools. One example of this innovation is our UK Holiday section which uses the Hoseasons API (web service) to return live prices. Hoseason’s customers often mistake our site for theirs they love it so much! There is massive scope and potential for travel online and we hope to continue to provide relevant content for users looking for advice. We recently added our new offers and codes section, which has helped us reinforce our standing as a site that provides incremental value. Our offers are, on the whole, updated by the merchants themselves through our custom built interface. This serves two purposes: allows merchants total control over offers and codes and keeps things super fresh for visitors. We combine all offers with our reviews in a brand relevant manner which results in great coverage for any travel supplier that chooses to work proactively with us.

Ambitions for 2009:
To continue to expand our visitor base with helpful information and offers aswell as forging new long term relationships with quality travel suppliers. Also to take more holidays and be easier on new affiliate managers!

Best thing about affiliate marketing:
The ability to move quickly into new business relationships with hundreds of high profile advertisers. The ability to mould a fresh program into a highly organised one with real input on tactics and how to help the advertiser convert better. The fact that a savvy operator can take on some of the more established websites in various aspects is a great motivator for us.

Worst thing about affiliate marketing
The blanket approach to rewarding affiliates through the last man in model. I believe content affiliates that provide pre-sell on behalf of the advertiser to the customer through content should receive a higher % on a sale. This would go some way to encouraging ‘quality sites’ and discouraging the rise in low value add sites such as voucher directories. It would also reinforce the CPA model rather than the CPC model which is becoming increasingly attractive in our opinion.

In a perfect affiliate world:

  • Affiliate managers would understand leakage (esp phone numbers on travel sites!)
  • Networks would act quickly on rule breakers.
  • Communication via MSN and phone would be mandatory, as would face to face meetings.
  • Travel merchants would all offer holidays as incentives!
  • Vouchers and offers would all have expiry dates on.

Best moment while running Travelpixel
Definitely catching a massive PPC travel fraudster with the help of one of the best affiliate managers, it was pure online detective drama!

Favourite saying(s):

  • The cream ALWAYS rises to the top
  • What goes around comes around!

Outside of work
Music production and DJing has always been a passion, provides a great creative output for me. That and traveling, which provides the intrinsic motivation for running a travel website.

Get in contact!
Feel free to contact me via the details above. I would be delighted to discuss any mutually beneficial relationships we can forge online via PPC or through Travelpixel.

Using lapse time analysis to understand the value of your affiliates

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

As a merchant or an affiliate with us you will notice in some of your reports a field called “Lapse Time”.  For the unaware this is the time delay between the last click and the sale taking place.

As there has been a lot of discussion over the past few weeks about the value of different types of affiliates I thought it would be useful to run this report for a couple of our campaigns to see what kind of results we get.

Here is what we found:-

Mobile Phone Client:

  • Content Affiliates: 532 minutes
  • Voucher Affiliates: 125 minutes
  • Incentive Affiliates: 15 minutes

Medium/Large Retail Client:

  • Content Affiliates: 25 minutes
  • Voucher Affiliates: 23 minutes
  • Incentive Affiliates: 10 minutes

Both of the above are based on transactions over a historical period so take at least 500 transactions each into account.

It would be foolish to draw conclusions from two merchants as every merchant will have very different results (as you can clearly see above) but it’s a very useful report to run when you want to analyse your affiliate programme.

For merchants there are two ways of getting to this information – either via the Check Transactions report or by Exporting a transaction report; if you need any help or advice on this please feel free to contact us via enquiries@affiliatefuture.co.uk
